Why the People, Not the Leadership, Define the United States
Why the People, Not the Leadership, Define the United States

Introduction

The United States has long stood as a beacon of democracy, freedom, and opportunity. However, in recent years, growing concerns about corruption and self-interest among political leaders as well as dark money in our politics have caused many to question what truly represents an America that seems to be in conflict with itself. Despite headlines focusing on government scandals, leadership failures and a Congress that has totally abdicated its responsibilities, the spirit and values of the American people have remained an authentic representation of the country, until now.  Right now, that very concept is being questioned as it never has before and that makes for perilous times.

The Power of the People

America’s strength has always come from its citizens. The everyday actions of Americans—volunteering, helping neighbors, advocating for justice, participating in civic life and military families who make the greatest sacrifices for this country have always demonstrated the core values that define this nation. From teachers shaping young minds to first responders risking their lives, the commitment to community and service was alive in towns and cities across the country. But what has happened over the past year seems to have many of our citizens questioning what it means to be an American.  In the minds of many, including some of our most senior public officials, being an American has new meaning.  Intolerance rather than tolerance, indifference and cruelty rather than compassion and empathy and an acceptance of the demonizing of people who are different from their version of an American.  While many citizens are busy with their everyday lives and pay little attention to what’s happening in this nation, there are many who see the calamitous end to this newfound political folly and have decided that it is not the America they know or want.  The people of Minnesota and other areas have shown the true meaning and courage of America by standing up to the forces that are working to divide and turn us against one another. Hopefully the power of the people can utilize their collective  strength to win this battle for the soul of America.

Resilience and Unity in Diversity Is Strength not Weakness

One of the most remarkable aspects of the United States has always been its diversity.  A nation that was formed, by its very founding, to welcome people from outside our borders. Americans come from every corner of the globe, bringing a multitude of cultures, traditions, and perspectives. Despite differences, the people unite in moments of crisis and celebration, showing resilience and solidarity. Whether banding together after natural disasters or rallying for civil rights, it is the collective actions of citizens that tell the real story of America.  It is upsetting to know that now, many of the things that bound us together are being ripped apart by unscrupulous politicians who have played on our fears and insecurities.  Much of the advancements we have achieved are being questioned and reversed under the guise of redefining American greatness while in fact the opposite is true.

Standing Against Corruption

While corruption and unethical behavior in leadership can tarnish the nation’s image, Americans have traditionally stood up against injustice. Grassroots movements, investigative journalism, and public protests are just a few ways citizens hold leaders accountable. The checks and balances enshrined in the Constitution empower the people to demand transparency and integrity, reminding the world that power ultimately resides with the populace.  But the current political landscape, which is in a battle to stifle dissent and criticism is taking this country down a path that will not easily be reversed.  While there are determined individuals, groups and institutions that are bearing the brunt of this fight, we may all find ourselves living in a country that we no longer recognize unless we all take a stand.

Everyday Heroes

It has not been the politicians or the elite who shaped the character of the United States—it is ordinary Americans. Nurses, factory workers, small business owners, and countless others contribute daily to the nation’s prosperity and well-being. Their perseverance, kindness, and ingenuity are what truly represent the country. Stories of heroism and selflessness abound, from those who donate blood after emergencies to those who support struggling families during economic downturns to those who run into burning buildings to save lives.  The elite should be down on their knees thanking this country for the successes they would most probably not achieve elsewhere, but a great many of them show little to no gratitude to this nation.  In fact, they continue to take more than they give looking for tax breaks and special treatment at the expense of  the hard-working people in this nation.

The Enduring American Spirit Under Attack

Despite challenges and periods of turmoil, the American spirit endures. Hope, optimism, and a belief in progress are woven into the fabric of society. Americans continue to dream, innovate, and strive for a better future—not just for themselves, but for generations to come. This spirit transcends political divides and leadership failures, forming the foundation of the nation’s identity.  We are in a different place right now.  That America Spirit is under direct attack by individuals who lack the courage and character to lead this country into the future.  We will be challenged by events we cannot even conceive of right now and having leaders who respect the citizens of this nation and the fundamentals this country was founded on will be critical to our success and maybe even our survival.  Citizens need to wake up and decide if the values of this country are worth fighting for and if our deadliest enemy is a 5-year-old and their family or a 20-year-old college student who has overstayed their visa.  Or is it the teacher who educates us on the truth of the history of this nation not the sanitized version that erases all our dark acts but truths that have taught us valuable and enduring lessons. Or is it a group of unscrupulous, intolerant individuals who believe the government is not for the people, by the people but there to profit off this nation in a way that has never been done before.

Conclusion

While leadership can falter and corruption may exist, it is the people who symbolize what America stands for. Their actions, values, and unwavering commitment to justice and equality are the true representation of the United States. As history has shown, when leadership fails, the American people have a responsibility to restore the nation’s ideals. Ultimately, the heart and soul of America are found not in those who govern, but in those who live, work, and dream within its borders.  As we approach our 250th Birthday, it is more important than ever that we recognize that what made this country great were the people who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of all and if we truly want to continue down the path to a more perfect union, we must demand our politicians mirror the character of this nation, not imprint their unprincipled character on the nation.  It is said that when Benjamin Franklin was asked at the Constitutional Convention, “Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?”   Franklin replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.”   So, my fellow citizens the challenge is in our court…..do we keep it!
